Over the October half term break, Emanuel took 25 members of the senior rugby squad on tour to the Basque Country. The tour party flew into Bilbao on Saturday 13th October and faced their first opposition in San Sebastien at the hottest point of the day. The team didn’t let the early start, journey or the high temperatures impact on the performance. Tries from Jake, Dan, Ed, Jake, Jack and six points from the boot of Jesse saw Emanuel 1st XV open the tour account with a 36 – 21 win.
The players had plenty of opportunity to enjoy each other’s company and experience the other side of touring. The party had a great time at Laser Quest with standout performances from Aiden and Charlie. The boys were also able to challenge themselves and work outside of their comfort zones on a high ropes experience, a surf lesson and a structured coaching session with Biarritz RFC. Finn excelled in the open water - however, he struggled to find his rhythm up in the treetops.
The tour closed with our second fixture: an evening kick-off under lights against R.C.B.A Rugby Club. The match was well attended by the local community, creating a great atmosphere and experience for all involved. The opposition were a step up from the first fixture, and tries from Jake and Gabriel weren’t enough to overcome the physical and direct opposition. Emanuel lost on this occasion with 29 – 12.
The tour ended on Thursday 18th October with an outstanding lunch in the city of San Sebastien, where the players and staff enjoyed a wide selection of local foods before departure. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr Hanson and Mr Rogers for supporting the tour and to the players for their efforts throughout.
