The Psychotronic Book Club had a healthy eight participants for David Brin’s cult 1985 post-apocalyptic novel The Postman when we met last Tuesday. This is a very challenging novel for pupils of middle school age, and although it was written in the 1980s, when the year 2000 is far in the future, it has much to say about the world of 2018. Some of the group found it hard-going; making the jump from teenage fiction to serious adult novels is not easy and The Postman really sets the bar very high. It was a great effort from everyone.
After Christmas we will be reading another cult novel - Birdbox by Josh Malerman - which, since it was published in 2014, has become a word-of-mouth smash hit across the world. The film version premiers on Netflix on December 22nd and we are fascinated to see how this amazing book has been adapted for the screen. Our discussion will also include the film and how it is adapted.
The Psychotronic Book Club meets once every half term to discuss our novel of choice - often a contemporary or cult classic, but guaranteed to be strange. This is one of Emanuel’s longest running smaller clubs and has covered a huge range of literature over the years it has been meeting. New members are always welcome and copies of the next book we are reading are always available in the library. The club is aimed at pupils in year 9 and above.
