We had our first Junior Literary Society (JLS) this week with Emma, Esme, Carmen, Jadyn, Emma, Dan and Katie keen to find out what we are going to be doing this term. After we had a run-through of our schedule we had a game of ‘book snap’ - a fun activity we will be returning to more fully in our meeting on the 17th September. In this fun book-based game everyone was given a pair of book covers and they had to figure out how the covers were connected to each other.
In the photo above, pupils display some of the covers. For any big readers out there, here are a couple of examples:
The Call by Peadar O'Guilin and The Carnival at Bray by Jessie Foley (answer: both set in Ireland)
Sweet Freak by Sophie Kenzie and One of Us is Lying by Karen McManus (answer: both books have social media as a theme)
The JLS doubles up with the junior quiz group, which was also introduced in the lower school assembly this week. Some pupils choose to attend both groups while others attend one or the other. We are competing in the south London heat of the Kids’ Lit Quiz towards the end of November and will shortly start recruiting a team, with the first meeting on October 2nd.
The JLS usually runs on alternative Monday or Tuesdays 1.45pm and all pupils from years 6-8 are very welcome. Our schedule for the rest of this term is as follows:
