Last Thursday, Emanuel travelled to London Oratory School for the final round of the group stage in the Hans Woyda Mathematics Competition, knowing that a victory would be good enough to make a little piece of history by reaching the knockout phase of the competition for the first time.
Making her debut, Lucy (year 9) took the occasion in her stride and performed outstandingly well.
Thomas (upper sixth), who has an interview next week to read Mathematics at Cambridge, produced a number of magical moments and more than matched his highly accomplished opposite number.
Our most seasoned campaigner Anna (year 11) made a couple of uncharacteristic blips, but as usual, she was extraordinarily good by normal standards.
Due to the strength in depth in the lower sixth, Joe (one of five Emanuel pupils sitting the three and a half hour long BMO1 paper this week) made his first appearance of the season. He also produced some quite brilliant solutions and won the final two points, securing the victory that propelled Emanuel into the knockout stage.
Final score: Emanuel 36, London Oratory 31.
