Since September we have played three of our eight fixtures in the Briant Poulter Surrey Chess League. We play in the ‘Rapid Play’ division, where matches last a maximum of one hour, with everyone playing two matches in an evening. Thus far we have performed remarkably well by winning three out of three and are currently top of the league.
The scores are:
Sutton Grammar School 5.5 Emanuel 6.5
Southborough School 2 Emanuel 10
Hampton 3 Emanuel 9
After Christmas we have return fixtures against the above schools and a double fixture against Whitgift. We are not getting ahead of ourselves, but have every chance of winning a trophy for the first time in many years.
We have a small but committed group of players: Enzo, Pietro (year 13), MacKenzie (year 12), Luke, Sophie (year 11), Zeeshan (year 9) and Charlie (year 8). Luke has been a fantastic captain winning all six of his matches thus far. Enzo has also won all six.
Our Blitz Chess competition has not attracted the usual high number of entrants; however, 14 pupils have taken part and enjoyed the very fast-moving five minute format. Mr Lai from the Maths department proved to be a tough competitor, beating many of the pupils.
The final was contested between Luke (year 11) and Charlie (year 8) in which Luke was the eventual and deserved winner.
The third and fourth match was contested between MacKenzie (year 12) and Zeeshan (year 9) in which Zeeshan triumphed.
We also had a junior award in which Herbert (year 7) played Achille (year 7) in the final with Achille winning. Achille has showed great commitment to school chess and will probably play for the school team in 2019.
Well done to everyone for their efforts with chess this term.
