A hearty crowd braved the lashing rain for Open House Day last Saturday, both tours with the School Archivist were full to capacity, with upwards of thirty people on each walk. It is a long-standing tradition for us to photograph OEs who join us wearing old school caps. Funnily enough Mr Jay Dalley (OE1976-83), who is in the centre of the photo on the top right of montage below, was in the final year caps were compulsory and he recalled pupils joyfully burning them or throwing them on the railway lines!
Also featured is Mr Gary Willcocks (OE1953-58) who was great fun on the tour, having first arrived at Emanuel over six decades ago and still had fantastic recollection for buildings and locations. What we referred to as the ‘Junior Dining Hall’ but is now the ‘Concert Hall’ was well remembered by Gary as ‘The Old Hall’. Other visitors went on shorter tours, and we even spotted a new Year Seven pupil giving her parents her own personal Open House tour!
Our next Historical Walk will be in early June, when we once again doff the old school caps for participation in Wandsworth Cultural Fortnight.
